The Mini Pavois serves up the season’s first race across Biscay and provides a trial run for many who will be racing this course later this year during the Mini Transat. It was a warm up for the organisers, Grand Pavois, too who pulled out all the stops and had electronic billboards all over the city of La Rochelle notifying the public that we were in town and worth a visit

Sixty odd singlehanded boats, eager to begin the race and show off in the first outing of the season, creates an interesting scene at the start line. I was touched right on the line by a boat taking liberty with the rules but we crossed the line together on the gun right by the committee boat.
Out on a qualifier

I’m out sailing, and while I’m the only one allowed on the boat you can come along for the ride too. Using a SPOT tracker, I have created a page that is linked in the upper right corner of the homepage that will automatically update with my position as I sail from Pornichet to Ireland, to La Rochelle and back.

Minis can be fast an exciting, they can also be painfully slow, but whatever they are they are certainly not overly spacious or comfortable. Most skippers get off after a day or weeks sailing with grimacing faces, desperately unfolding and tugging arms and legs back into their original configuration before retiring to houses with warm beds and big kitchens.
